Sleep

Genesis 2:20b-22
“But for Adam no suitable helper was found.  So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh.  Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.”

Acts 12:6-7
“The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance.  Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell.  He struck Peter on the side and woke him up.  ‘Quick, get up!’ he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.”

Ephesians 5:14b
“Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

Saviour of all, you are the God of quiet miracles.

As we rest, you restore.  Our participation in your new creation is to surrender our restless efforts and await your touch.

Grant us the faith to lie down in peace when all remains unresolved.  Awaken us in your time and call us to a new obedience.

We ask this in the name of Christ, who from the sleep of death brought salvation, and drew life from his wounded side.
