Whisper

1 Kings 19:11b-13
“Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind.  After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.  After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire.  And after the fire came a gentle whisper.  When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.”

Isaiah 40:1-3
“Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.  Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.”

John 19:30
“When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’  With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”

Mighty God, tempests form at the touch of your breath, and whirlwinds spin as your voice stirs them.

whisperThough your power is displayed as nature obeys your bidding, you have chosen to speak to us in a gentle whisper.  To reach us you have sent your Spirit, who murmurs the tender consolation that we have been found by you.

Teach us to hear you in the stillness.  Open our ears to catch your sighing when we wander, so that we might return to your embrace.

This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ who loved us with his dying whisper, and saved us at the moment of his faintest cry.
