Barley

Ruth 2:14
“At mealtime Boaz said to [Ruth], ‘Come over here.  Have some bread and dip it in the wine vinegar.’  When she sat down with the harvesters, he offered her some roasted grain.  She ate all she wanted and had some left over.”

John 6:9, 11, 13
“’Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?’…Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted…So [the disciples] gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.”

Hosea 10:12
“Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, until he comes and showers righteousness on you.”

Great Provider, your hand turns the seed planted into the basketful harvested.

In your economy you bless the ordinary and make it abundant.  By your transforming hand the lowliest offering becomes a source of life for the multitude.

barleyThough we are ungenerous in nature, do not give us permission to think of you as a withholding God.  Release from our clenched fists the small kernels we cling to, so that through them we can feed the hungry with joy and plenty.

This we ask in the name of Jesus; his body broken for us as barley bread, filled with love unfailing.
