1 Samuel 2:1a, 7-8
“Then Hannah prayed and said: ‘My heart rejoices in the Lord; in the Lord my horn is lifted high…The Lord sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor.’”
Luke 1:46-48a, 51-52
“And Mary said: ‘My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant…He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.’”
“‘Sing, O barren woman, you who never bore a child; burst into song, shout for joy, you who were never in labor; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband,’ says the Lord.”
Holy Father, the cry of earth is a heaven-sent longing for a future fulfillment.
Each generation seeks hope, promised by the arrival of a child. To the humble you give the Son who truly saves.
Teach us to sing for the joy of barrenness broken by your surprising birth. With a melody of praise we welcome you as the gift our hearts have truly desired.
In the name of the Son who has become the eternal song, we lift grateful voices to you.
