Coal

James 3:5-6
“Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.  Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.  The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.  It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.”

Isaiah 6:1b, 5-7
“…I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple…‘Woe to me!’ I cried.  ‘I am ruined!  For I am a man of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.’  Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar.  With it he touched my mouth and said, ‘See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.’”

Romans 10:8b-10
“‘The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,’ that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming:  That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Holy and beautiful are you, Lord God Almighty.

coalBy our untamed words we are guilty of igniting a blaze that burns foul and black.  Sin smoulders in our rebellious speech.

Touch our lips with forgiving fire.  May the coal of our confession that ‘Jesus is Lord’ refine and restore us.

Hear us for the sake of this atoning name that purifies the pyres we have set to flame.
