Exodus 15:22-26
“Then Moses led Israel…into the Desert of Shur.  For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water.  When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter…So the people grumbled against Moses, saying, ‘What are we to drink?’  Then Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood.  He threw it into the water, and the water became sweet.  There the Lord made a decree and a law for them, and there he tested them.  He said, ‘If you listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God…I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.’”

John 5:2-9
“Now there is in Jerusalem …a pool…Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame and the paralyzed.  One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years…[Jesus] asked him, ‘Do you want to get well?’  ‘Sir,’ the invalid replied, ‘I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred.  While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.’  Then Jesus said to him, ‘Get up!  Pick up your mat and walk.’  At once the man was cured…”

“Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up.”

Gentle Healer, you are the source of health and wholeness.

You test us with the good things of earth that ultimately prove unsatisfying, but you do not abandon us in our disappointment.  While the bitterness still lingers you approach us and pledge your faithfulness.

In our longing for sweet water, do not let our souls turn sour.  Redirect our gaze from soothing pools to the true cure for our brokenness.

Through Christ we ask; the living water that heals us from the disease of sin and quenches our eternal thirst.
