Advocate

Job 42:7-9
“After the Lord had said these things to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, ‘I am angry with you and your two friends, because you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.  So now take seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and sacrifice a burnt offering for yourselves.  My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according to your folly….’  So Eliphaz…Bildad…and Zophar…did what the Lord had told them; and the Lord accepted Job’s prayer.”

1 John 2:1-2
“My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin.  But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.  He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.”

1 Samuel 12:20b, 22-23
“You have done all this evil; yet do not turn away from the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart…For the sake of his great name the Lord will not reject his people, because the Lord was pleased to make you his own.  As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you.”

Righteous Judge, you desire the end of all foolish and evil things.

You do not withhold your anger, but with complementing force you raise up an intercessor.  Without diminishing your wrath against our sin, you strengthened the voice of our mediator.

advocateLet us rest in the knowledge that you faithfully give a hearing to the advocate for our souls.  As we have received mercy, teach us to plead on behalf of those who do wrong.

We know our prayer is heard because of Jesus Christ, who in resurrection power has made atonement to ably and compassionately contend for us.
