Offering

Genesis 4:2b-5
“Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.  In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord.  But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock.  The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor.  So Cain was very angry , and his face was downcast.”

Luke 11:1a
“One day Jesus was praying in a certain place.  When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray…’”

1 Corinthians 14:15b
“I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.”

Almighty Lord, in your mercy you grant us capacity to learn what pleases you.

We confess that we burden you with thoughtless and ill-timed petitions.  Our words remain juvenile, presented carelessly for lack of sincere study.

offeringWhen we kneel, may our first request humbly be, ‘Teach us to pray.’  Train our minds by your Spirit that we might prepare offerings acceptable in your sight.

Receive the prayer we have laid on the altar in the name of Christ, on whom you have looked with favour.
